Het klinkt zo vanzelfsprekend: de doeltaal gebruiken om leerlingen een vreemde taal effectiever te laten leren. Alleen: werkt het wel zo? Wordt er wel automatisch meer geleerd wanneer de docent de doeltaal inzet? Ja en nee. Het gaat namelijk niet om de kwantiteit van het doeltaalgebruik, maar om de kwaliteit: wanneer de docent de doeltaal bewust en didactisch verantwoord aanwendt, ontstaat er veel leerpotentieel. Handboek doeltaaldidactiek biedt docenten een naslagwerk dat de kern van de tweede-taalverwervingstheorie uiteenzet, aanvult met nieuwe inzichten, en dat geheel koppelt aan het gebruik van de doeltaal als didactisch instrument: doeltaal-leertaal.

In de startblokken is een beginnersmethode Nederlands voor Duitstalige studenten, naar ERK-niveau A2. Opvallende verschillen in grammatica en woordkeus tussen het Nederlands en het Duits komen expliciet aan bod. Verder wordt er optimaal gebruikgemaakt van de overeenkomsten met het Duits.
