Het boek geeft een overzicht van hoe het openbaar bestuur in Nederland eruitziet en zich ontwikkelt en het schetst de inrichting van het openbaar bestuur op de verschillende niveaus.

Duizend jaar openbaar bestuur in Nederland beschrijft onze bestuursgeschiedenis in vier perioden: de feodale wereld, de Republiek, de centraal geleide natiestaat en de verzorgingsstaat. Voor elke periode beschrijft de uitgave de politieke geschiedenis en de manier waarop het bestuur georganiseerd is. Naast de formele structuur wordt ook de dagelijkse praktijk van het bestuur besproken.
