Geschiedenis mag dan misschien het mooiste vak ter wereld zijn, er les in geven is niet zo eenvoudig als het lijkt. Er is zoveel verleden, waarmee zoveel verhalen kunnen worden verteld en zoveel verschillende doelen kunnen worden nagestreefd, dat een docent geschiedenis voortdurend knopen doorhakt: dit onderwerp wel, deze gebeurtenis niet, dit voorbeeld wel, dat dwarsverband nog even niet. Om die keuzes te maken, is kennis van zaken nodig. Niet alleen over het vakgebied zelf, maar ook over de vraag hoe je geschiedenis voor leerlingen zinvol, leerbaar en haalbaar kunt maken.
